Love that World (cup)

(NB.  The World Cup starts on 9 June 2006, with England’s first match on 10 June.)

I don’t know about you, but I don’t know where time goes.  Forget “it seems like Christmas was only last week”; I still think it’s 1957.  And here we are, with the World Cup upon us.  Sven’s squad for Group B, raring to go.

It’s amazing how everyone’s an expert!  We all know the finer points of Metatarsal injuries; and the relative merits of 4-4-2 and 4-3-1-2 and every other kind of line-up.  We know the details of the Paraguayan team; we know to watch out for Roque Santa Cruz, their demon striker; and which end of Frankfurt’s Waldstadion is going to be best for English tactics.  In some ways, we’ve been World Cupped to death.

But there it is.  Every four years, an international struggle for supremacy that falls short of being war.  Our hopes are with our team, and it feels good to identify with our St George’s flags and St George’s shirts and even our St George’s underwear.  Win or lose, we want to be proud of our boys.  We’re part of the team.  We belong.

Belonging is important.  Mutual respect and personal relationships give us a good self-image.  If someone tells you they respect you; if someone says they love you: you feel good.  The most famous verse in the Bible should make you feel good: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life[1].

Because you’re worth it[2].
